Discover the Magic of Ireland

It’s March and for many of us, that means St. Patrick’s Day. We in America celebrate this Luck o’ the Irish Day almost as much as those in Ireland do. We have a strong, Irish heritage here; even if you don’t have any Irish in your background, on March 17th, it doesn’t matter. In Ireland, it also doesn’t matter; when you are there you’re treated like one of the family.  I can say this with confidence as I experienced in on my own Irish adventure I took with my husband and daughter several years ago. Ireland, the Emerald Isle, is truly a magical place worth exploring and getting to know.

Often you hear about how friendly people are when someone talks about their travels. Well, when it comes to the Irish, this is no exaggeration. Everywhere we went, which was all around the Republic of Ireland and the Aran Islands, everyone we met was not only nice, but genuinely kind and welcoming. Local residents were happy to meet us and help us along the way, whether we got lost on a country road or were looking for a good pub suggestion.  I will admit when ever I did mention my father was Irish, there was an even deeper sense of that warm-fuzzy feeling when you get reunited with a long lost loved one. It was as though we were being welcomed back home by the extended family and this truly touched the heart.

So what else makes Ireland so amazing? There’s one thing which may surprise many. Often when we think of Ireland, we think of Scotland and England too, and our thoughts can easily turn to the well-known, traditional foods to be found in the British Isles. Even though food choices are international in flavor and variety, it’s easy to picture bangers and mash, fried food of all kinds and even haggis being everywhere in this part of the world. These foods don’t always appeal to everyone, and that’s fine, but if you are concerned that Ireland’s food will be much the same, let me put you at ease. Many of the dishes we think of as the finest in American dining, such as steak or salmon, and organic leafy garden greens or seasonal vegetables, have long been a part of Ireland’s culinary culture.

From the moment we arrived, it didn’t matter if we ate lunch or dinner at a road-side pub, a family owned restaurant in a small town, or took the ultimate splurge and dined gourmet-style in a castle, the food was extraordinary. Everywhere we ate, food was supplied by the local farms, often within  There’s also quite a few distinctly Irish flavors to enjoy such as Brennan cheese, Ireland’s answer brie, and coastal towns have incredible recipes for seafood. Tasting your way around Ireland would be a food-lover’s delight.
walking distance, or straight from their own garden. Sustainable farming practices and animal husbandry have long been in place here, and you can taste the difference.

We can’t talk about Ireland without talking about two major products which also help identify Irish Character: Irish Stout (Guinness) and Irish Whiskey (Jameson/Bushnell’s). When you experience Ireland, you’ll experience the taste of these two long-loved beverages like never before. Drinking the real deal in a genuine Irish Pub with the green hills nearby, simply can’t be beat.

History buffs should have Ireland on their Top 10 places to visit. History is truly alive on the Emerald Island. As a culture, the Irish still hold their ancestral history in high regard. The rest of world may consider the 5 Waves of Invasion as myth, but don’t say that too loud. These ancient stories are deeply ingrained in the Irish character and respect for the connection to the past they bring. You can get in touch with Ireland’s past at locations such as the Hill of Tara, New Grange, The Blarney Castle (Home of the world-famous Blarney Stone) and the Rock of Chashel where the great Irish hero-king Brian Boru ruled.

A stop in Dublin will provide you with some of the most incredible literary influences ever to come from Ireland, and the world. Examples includeUNESCO’s City of Literature. Experience living history with a stop in Waterford, the town where perhaps the world’s best crystal glassware and dishes are made. See for yourself as a new vase is made by an artisan glass -blower, and of course, you can get your own bit of Waterford Crystal before you leave.
The Book of Kells on display at Trinity College, and the works of W.B Yates, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, just to name a few. Dublin is such a literary town it’s been named

Ireland is also a place where you can easily step off the beaten road and take your own path. If you are willing to take a chance for adventure, you will be thrilled and cherish the results. While we were in Ireland there were many moments which could have only happened because we forged away from the crowds. This is not a difficult thing to do in Ireland, which also adds to the magic of this place. While there were bustling city centers and yes, tourist attractions with all the trappings such gift shops and photo-ops, it never took long to get out on our own and spend some quality time with the spirit of Ireland itself.

My daughter’s adventure of following the “Little Yellow Man” markers for a walking trails led her through pasture fields alive with the song of bird calls and an occasional lowing cow, to an ancient Dolmen, a stone cairn. The one she found was said to been one of the places Diarmuid and Grainne slept as they fled from Fin in a legend similar to Lancelet and Guinevere. As Lana puts it, “When I stopped at the Dolmen, I had an overwhelming sense of anticipation. I walk around the cairn, which was like a small shelter one would seek to get out of the rain. I closed my eyes, touched the stone and it felt as though I could step back in time at any moment. Then I saw a large granite slab nearby and sat upon it for a rest. It was then that I took in the magnificent sight of the valley and river which spread out away from the field. I was awestruck by the beauty of this place.”

You can step off the path in Ireland too, and C.P. Trips can help make it happen, worry free. Get the Most from Your Travel Rewards Credit Card

Travel became more attainable for many people with the advent of Travel Reward Credit Cards. There are beneficial ways to use these cards, and detrimental practices best avoided. Understanding exactly how your travel rewards program works with your credit card is the first step in taking advantage of these programs so you can travel more with ease.

The idea behind these cards is simple, as you use the card, you earn points which can be redeemed towards travel expenses such as air fare and hotel accommodations. But with each card there is a specific set of rules and procedures established regarding how, where and when you can redeem your travel reward points. For many, trying to work it all out can quickly overwhelm, leaving would be travelers in the dark, as they give up trying to decipher just how they can use their travel reward points.

U.S, News and World Report (USNWR), one of the leading sources for relevant, reliable news and in-depth consumer research, has recently completed a survey of Travel Reward Credit Card users. The goal was to find out what people know about the cards they carry, how effective they are, and how they are being used when it comes to travel. The results are quite interesting. With more than 50% of the survey respondents saying they carry a regular balance on their cards, there is a high chance that the average consumer is actually losing money with these cards when interest and payments are taken into account.

This is not to say that Travel Reward Credit Cards are not worth it. On the contrary, when you have the right card for your lifestyle and budget, cards with travel reward programs can be an excellent way to get more from your vacations. Many cards include airline mileage points which can get you a cheaper ticket, or even an upgrade from coach to business class. This can make a big difference in how comfortably you can travel, especially on a long, international flight. Another common benefit is cost savings on accommodations, allowing for more excursions and experiences to be enjoyed while traveling.

With the USNWR 2017 Guide to Travel Reward Credit Cards, you can access some insightful information to help you determine which card could be best for you, or how you can use your card to gain more benefits from reward programs. We at C.P. Trips want to encourage travelers to educate themselves so they can make the best-informed decisions about their travel plans, and be happier with the memories they create no matter where or how they choose to travel to.

After reviewing the USNWR guide, you also have an experienced, local resource who can be of further assistance, Cindy Passannante, owner of C.P. Trips. Cindy regularly works with clients whom have Travel Reward Credit Cards. Her experience with the different programs available, alongside the travel industry ‘road map’, place her in a unique position to better assist her clients when it comes to getting the most out of their Travel Reward Credit Cards. There are endless ways to travel and experience the world. Travel reward programs can help turn your travel dreams into something more, and C.P. Trips can help you get there.

Oregon’s Painted Hills- A Journey Back in Time

Whether you are long time Oregon resident, or are planning a visit to the area, there are many places worth exploring. The Oregon Coast, Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood and Crater Lake are all well-known natural wonders which have captured the imagination and hearts of many a traveler. But have you heard of Oregon’sPainted Hills?  These are a spectacular site located within the John Day Fossil Beds Monument National Park in East/Central Oregon.

History comes alive with these colorfully layered mountains of earth. Hues ranging from reds to yellows, golds, blacks and browns fill the expanse of this geological wonder. What’s more these colors are enhanced by shades of green and lovely colorful flowers during the spring. A veritable rainbow is waiting for anyone who passes by.

The Painted Hills were formed over millions of years, including a time when the area was an ancient flood plain. Each color highlights a different geological era of flora and fauna, and the vast number of fossils found here have made this region one of the most acclaimed places for paleontologists to study.

The John Day Fossil Beds Monument Park includes not only the Painted Hills but two other main areas, The Claro Unit and Sheep Rock Unit, both with their own unique landscapes and fossil remains. Any science buff or naturalist is bound to find a treasure trove of exploration here. This part of Oregon is truly one of Nature’s best classrooms when it comes to learning about our ancient past.

You can also take a step back in time to when the wild west was still being tamed with local museums such as the KamWah Chung State Heritage Site, where you can see first-hand where locals were treated with Chinese medicine and techniques one hundred years ago. The site is located in the town of John Day, not far from the Monument Park and Painted Hills. With the interpretive center and museum, the past influences of the local culture come to life.

One of the best ways to travel to this part of the state is via
the JourneyThrough Time Scenic Byway. Starting in Biggs, just past The Dalles in the Columbia River Gorge, you follow US-97 where you travel along two of Oregon’s biggest rivers, the Deschutes and John Day. From the town of Antelope, the byway heads east on OR-218, taking you to the John Day Fossil Bed Monument Park, and onward to another town steeped with Oregon history, Baker City near the Wallowa Mountains, another of Oregon’s 7 Wonders.

Beyond stepping back in time with vistas of the Painted hills and old ghost towns, there are also recreational activities to enjoy in this part of Oregon. One of the most exciting and popular ones being river rafting, a perfect way to stay cool in the heat of summer. There are also thousands of miles of trails for hiking, cycling or horseback riding. Those seeking a winter getaway have plenty of choices, such as skiing and snowmobiling to snow shoeing throughout the region.

There are a variety of local culinary treats to enjoy, from wine and beer to locally grown organic foods and artisan cafes, each small town has its own taste offerings. Located close to the Painted Hills in Mitchell, Oregon, you will find the Historic Oregon Hotel B&B, built originally in the 1800s, another excellent way to take a step back in time. There are also vacation rental properties available around the region.

If you are looking to experience a uniquely getaway, spend some time around one of Oregon’s 7 Wonders, the Painted Hills, you will be glad you did. The agents of C.P. Earth: A Wonderfully Weird World

Fingal’s Cave, Scotland photo credit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dun_deagh/6143869489
The world is an amazing place, full of wonder, mystery and awe-inspiring places and natural phenomenon. It’s time once again to share some of the incredible things which only Mother Nature can create. If you have been looking for something different to experience or searching for travel inspiration, perhaps one of the following Natural Experiences will become your next travel destination.

When it comes to extremes, natural features across the landscape have made a lasting impact upon our world. Visiting any these unforgettable natural wonders would give a traveler an experience like no other. CLICK HERE to check out 9 incredible natural wonders from around the world, as posted by Conde Naste Traveler.

Australia is a land full of wonder and oddities in nature; these oddities are a big part of what makes the Land Down Under so incredibly special. Koalas, Kangaroos and Platypus get plenty of attention, but there are many more uniquely Australian animals
worth seeing if you can when you travel there. The Lyre bird is something not to be missed, for it is truly one of a kind in avian life. CLICK HERE to see amazing video footage of a Lyre Bird.

If you want to see a grand spectacle of nature, which nothing, and I do mean nothing, can seem to stop, you will want to plan a journey to a little island in the Indian Ocean, to Christmas Island, Australia. With over 14 species of crabs, this
small island has a big reputation for being home to one of the most spectacular natural wonders ever witnessed, the annual mass migration of the Red Crab.

Over 100,000 million of these bright red crabs migrate in each year in November, at the beginning of the wet season; from the mountainous forest, down to the sea. En masse, spawning occurs to start a new generation. Those that survive the trek down, make it back up again in the tropical forest where they live. When the babies are born, they too make this incredible journey. CLICK HERE to see this wonder of nature yourself.

Adventure Awaits on the Caravan to Ashland

Our newest Classy Ladies Getaway (& Couples Too!) vacation is a great opportunity to get away for some summer fun right here in the Northwest. If you are looking for a bit of adventure but don’t want to have worry about the details, this Northwest excursion could be the perfect choice. This has become one of Cindy’s most loved trips, and now you can join her and her husband Tony, alongside other travelers for a caravan to Ashland Adventure in two parts.

Cindy is passionate about the Arts, especially theater. On any given weekend (when she is in town!) she can be found at a live performance of some kind. From Portland Center Stage productions, to the Portland Columbia Symphony season, and special occasions such as the latest Cirque de Soleil extravaganza, you can find Cindy there. So, it should come as no surprise to find that Cindy loves the OregonShakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR.

This annual festival always promises incredible performances of not only works by Shakespeare, but more contemporary productions as well. Each season includes 11 different plays which run from June through mid-October. Ashland, where the festival is held is the ideal place to have such a wonderful variety of theater happening. This is a quintessentially charming town, with a vibrant downtown district full of galleries, shops and a wide range of culinary delights.

Cindy also loves the variety of recreational excursions to be experienced near Ashland. Extending beyond the town is the Rogue River Valley, one of Oregon’s wonders. Whether you are a nature lover, recreational buff, or both, this region is teeming with wildlife and wild adventures to experience. One of the best ways to get the full effect of the Rogue River is to raft down this mighty river of Southern Oregon. Even better is a guided rafting trip with delightfully comfortable lodges to stay in as you journey; or you can always camp beneath the stars.

We have taken these two vacation ideas which Cindy loves, and turned them into one amazing journey through our Classy Ladies Getaways (& Couples Too!) travel program. While space lasts, you can join the Caravan to Ashland Adventure, coming up August 24th- August 30thh.
For a fun way to travel, this small group will caravan to Ashland, carpool style. A stop for lunch, wine tasting and tour of King’s Estate Winery in Eugene gets the journey started. Once you arrive in Ashland, there will be plenty of time for you to do as you please. Before you depart we will help you plan any specific activities you would like to enjoy.

The planned itinerary for the Caravan to Ashland Adventure has been organized so you can enjoy both the festival and the river raft journey, or just the festival portion of the trip, the choice is yours. Outlined below are the details including the cost of each.

Cruising Solo Just Got Easier

Cruising is a great way to take a vacation. There are cruises all around the world fit for any travel budget. Cruise companies offer their own unique style of cruising to appeal to every walk of life. There are specialty cruises with amazing events, and the culinary experiences on board many a ship are spectacular. But there has been one thing that has kept many a solo traveler from enjoying cruising as much as they may like. Until recently it has been standard practice for cruise staterooms to be sold on a double occupancy basis only. This has meant that a solo traveler has had to pay double the rate for a room, yes, that’s right, double the price.

But cruise companies are also hip to new trends and like other industries in travel and tourism, they look for new ways to gain new clients. The latest trend is all about solo travelers. Cruise companies have realized that they can get more solo travelers if they stop making them pay for the extra bed in their stateroom.

More and more cruises are offering solo travelers a solo rate, allowing them easier access to incredible journeys all over the world. Listed below are what some of our Cruise Partners are now offering the solo traveler.

AzamaraClub Cruises has lowered their single occupancy rate to 125% of a double occupancy stateroom. What’s more, the cost includes gratuities for bar, dining and housekeeping staff, saving you even more on your cruise budget.

HollandAmerica Line takes a bit of a different approach to solo travelers. There are several program amenities offered to those cruising on their own, including mixers, parties and cocktail hours for solo travelers, as well as a variety of activities such as their cooking demonstrations, trivia games and wine tastings which any passenger can join. Holland America Line also offers a way for solo
travelers to save money through their SinglePartners Program. You can book a room and get matched with another passenger to share a stateroom. You are guaranteed the lower rate of a double occupancy room even if a match can’t be found.

Norwegian CruiseLine was the first company to include studio cabins, created specifically for the solo traveler. The first were on board their Epic ship, a mega floating entertainment extravaganza. NCL has since added studio cabins to additional ships, and they are all priced without a single supplement fee.

RoyalCaribbean Cruise Line also has studio cabins available with no additional single supplement fee. They offer a variety of staterooms on several of their cruise ships. These include interior staterooms, as well as one with views, and even balcony studios. As a solo traveler on RCCL, you have more options of where you stay on board.

Value River Cruises, is currently offering special deals for solo travelers cruising along the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe. Typical specials include beverage packages, or on board credit and even discounted shore excursions. Now companies are offering to waive the single supplement fee for solo travelers on select cruises.

With these new options coming more available for the solo traveler, cruising is easier than ever before. For a small fee Cindy Passannante can help you plan your next cruise adventure. Call or email today at 503-658-5646 or cptrips@aol.com

One benefit to being a Travel Professional is the opportunity to get a sneak peek of a ship, hotel or destination from time to time. With Travel Industry tours and events, we get a chance to talk with staff first hand, and to see accommodations in person. These events give us a one on one feel for what a company has to offer our clients. We can then share insight from our personal experience with our clients. We can speak directly about what makes a cruise worth taking, which hotel will best meet a client's needs, or what first hand experience about a location makes a destination so incredible.

Recently a few of our partner agents enjoyed a tour and lunch on board a small cruise ship, right here in Portland, Oregon. Un-Cruise Adventures is a cruise company like no other. They provide up-close and personal experiences on this side of the Pacific Ocean. From Alaska, down into the Pacific Northwest, and further south to the Baja Peninsula, Mexico and Central America, as well as west across the Pacific to Hawaii and the Galapagos. The small ships of Un-Cruise Adventures offers exclusive experiences with wildflife, cultural and history unlike other cruise or tour companies.

Guests are pampered in un-rushed comfort with impeccably fine service, while immersing themselves in a variety of  activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, hiking and more. Un-Cruises has unique opportunities for guests to see a destination in its most natural state, to get in touch with a piece of history and share in-depth connections with local communities, all with just a small number of other travelers. Cruises accommodate as few as 22 people on a yacht, to a maximum of 88 people on their largest boats. An Un-Cruise Adventure is truly a trip like no other.

Our lunch tour on the USS Legacy took us onto a replica coastal steamer with a variety of amenities. This boat holds up to 88 passengers and takes travelers on a round trip 1,000 mile cruise up the Columbia and Snake Rivers.  The unparalleled vista of the Columbia River Gorge pass by as you relax in one of two hot tub located on the top deck, sipping a regional wine and meeting new friends. Yoga on the deck helps you start a new day, and the casual elegance of the dinning hall lets you feast on local culinary treats.

There are two adventures to be had on the USS Legacy. History buffs and lovers of the Pacific Northwest will revel in the Legacy of Discovery cruise which focuses on the history and cultures of the Gorge. With historians and heritage guides the past comes to life as you explore the beauty and unique places of the rivers. The Columbia River Gorge is a region of fine wineries, which you can experience first hand with the Ameritage Four Rivers of Wine and History cruise. Wine experts are on board providing information and taste testings of the best wines in the region. Personally guided tours to several wineries let you see first hand just what makes this such a wonderful area for vineyards.

We enjoyed a nice welcome aboard with mimosas, tea and coffee while small groups of guests were taken by their own Un-Cruise guide to tour the steamer ship. To begin our tour viewed each type of stateroom. We began with the Owner's Suite- primed with fine details to truly spoil you as a guest on board. With a full living space and bedroom with King sized bed, this stateroom had luxury all over it. A full bar complimented the soft leather lounger and the Jacuzzi tub beckoned for a soak. There were many small touches that also made you feel at home, a selection of books to read at your leisure, and even a canister of handcrafted walking staffs and umbrellas for your personal use.

Each stateroom had its own bit of luxury and were all well appointed with an excellent plan to space attended too. The beds not only included drawers for your clothing but space underneath to tuck away your suitcase. Wall mounted flat screens televisions were in each room for night time movie viewing, and while the bathrooms were small, as is necessary on a boat, they were all comfortably functional with the decor hankering back to a bygone era.

We were shown the cozy hot tubs on the top deck, and images of sipping wine while watching the Columbia River Gorge came to mind, what a unique way to watch the world pass by. The thought of star gazing while soaking made us ready to stay on board for their next cruise down the river! We were taken to the Bridge where you got a real glimpse back in time with the traditional ship's wheel at the stern. This replica steamer will take you back a hundred years and then some. All guests are welcome to join the captain and crew on the bridge at anytime, and stories abound with each interaction you  experience.

The lower decks include an open seating dinning hall and full bar lounge,as well as giving you another historical experience with the Pesky Barnacle Saloon. The history focus of these river cruises invites you to not only listen and learn, but to play along as you wish. There is a great steamer trunk full of hats and props from the days  of the Pacific Northwest of the 1870s, through the 1930s, the heyday of coastal steamer ships.

We were entertained by two wonderful historic guides who not
only shared a bit of history, but interacted in character from their costumes, to how they spoke and what they said, making all of us feel welcome and intrigued. When you take your own Un-Cruise Adventure, along the Columbia River Gorge, your guides will be with you on the boat and along shore excursion journeys, adding that extra something to make this trip through history that much more memorable.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch as part of our tour. The food was finely prepared and a taste sensation with a grilled prawn and rice noodle dish that was savory down to the last bite. Desert was a fruit explosion with a tart filled with blue berries, black berries, raspberries and strawberries. During lunch we were also able to get to meet more of UN-Cruise crew. Each person we spoke to was not only friendly, but loved what they did and who they worked for. We all know it says a lot about a company when the employees are happy, and the staff on board were spot on for service with smile that was genuine. Everyone made us feel welcome and want to return for a full cruise.

Whether you live in the Portland Metro area, or are looking to come visit our corner of the world, a river cruise along the Columbia River Gorge is an experience not to miss! An Un-Cruise Adventure will take you back in time and surround you with comfortable luxury which you will remember for a lifetime.
